Warning Against Enticement

Proverbs 1:8-9 "My Child, listen when your father corrects you. Don't neglect your mother's instruction. What you learn from them will crown you with grace and be a chain of honor around your neck."

In ancient times, writings of instructions or wisdom usually used "my son" to refer to a person open to instruction and eager for knowledge (Quest Study Bible).

I remember way back then when my mother said "If your friends jump off a bridge, then would you too?" She only said that because someone was enticing me.

Back when I was a child, I used to live in Waikiki with my cousins as neighbors and they always enticed me by going to the convenient store to buy candy. Being a child, I have no money and my parents did not want me to eat too much candy. Whenever they asked me to go with them, I quickly stole some money from my parents, and it was wrong. In Proverbs 1:10, King Solomon wrote "My child, if sinners entice you, turn your back on them!" These people set a trap and ambush themselves, trying to get themselves killed (Proverbs 1:18). If I choose to be a sinner among them, then my fate would be the same.

God is sovereign. Fate, destiny, and any forces does not affect Him. It seems like fate is another word for cursed because enticing people only leads to sin and in rebellion against God's law and commands. Proverbs 1:15 says to not go with them and stay far away from their paths.

Dear God,
Wisdom comes from You. Proverbs 1:7 says the fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge. You are the source of wisdom and since you are the source of wisdom, let me be in reverence for You because reverence for You is the controlling principle of applying wisdom from Your word. Correct me when I am wrong and let me learn from you, because I want to be wise just like You. Father God, may You be the Sovereign Lord in my life. Keep me away from enticement and draw me closer to You because if I am drawn closer to You, Holy God then I know I am living a disciplined and successful life. Please God, make Your child wiser and let me understand and receive guidance from Your word. Let me live a holy, righteous, and pure life.
In Jesus Name Amen.
